BED BUGS

  • Adult Bedbugs are small, oval, flat and rusty red or mahogany colored.
  • They are flat and thin when unfed, but become more elongated, plump and red in color when they are full of blood.
  • They are mainly active at night and feed while their hosts are asleep.
  • Tell-tale signs of a bedbug infestation are: blood spots on linen, two or three bites in a row.
  • During the day, they harbor in nearby cracks and crevices, folds of mattresses, along seams, between bed slats, etc.

FLEAS

  • The Black Death was one of the worst natural disasters in history. In 1347 A.D. a great plague swept over Europe, ravaged cities causing widespread hysteria and death. One third of the population of Europe died. The primary culprits in transmitting this disease were oriental rat fleas carried on the back of black rats.
  • The female lays eggs on the host (cat or dog). The eggs usually fall off the animal onto bedding, rugs, chairs, outside on lawns, etc.
  • Eggs can hatch 10 days later and a worm-like larvae emerges.
  • The larvae moult numerous times and they are mature in 7 – 14 days.
  • They then pupate in silken cocoons for 1 week before emerging as adults.
  • Adult fleas can survive long periods without food.
  • If a homeowner takes the pet and family on vacation, the fleas will continue to develop. When the occupants return from vacation and walk across the floor, then only will the fleas emerge from their pupal casings and join any remaining (and hungry) adults in a feeding binge.
